Kaleto Fortress above Smolyan

The remains of a late antique fortress on a rocky peak in the Turluka area, part of the chain of Rhodope fortresses built under Emperor Justinian I. Its whole southern wall has been uncovered: it is 38 m long and stands up to 2.5 m high, and the summit overlooks the entire town. From the car park by St. Panteleimon Monastery the path is about 600 m long and takes half an hour; you can also walk up from town along the green waymarks above the cemetery (about 2.8 km).
